Music Video Recommendations

In lesson, we were given the task of suggesting our favourite music videos so that we could see what makes them appealing. We applied the music videos to Goodwins Conventions of Music Videos to show how they appeal to audiences.
The music video that I personally chose was Bad Romance by Lady Gaga. The reason that I chose this music video is because of the mise-en-scene used in the video and the choreography of the dance routine. This music video applies to Goodwins Conventions of Music Videos as it shows the typical genre characteristics as it is a pop song and songs of this genre usually revolve around the artist and usually includes a choreographed dance routine performed by the artist. The music video also shows "demands of the record label" as the video focuses solely on the artist and the video has many close ups of the artists face, this particular artist has also developed a 'motif' throughout most of her music as Lady Gaga is known for her eccentric outfits both in her music videos and in real life. The video follows a narrative based on the lyrics of the song as the lyrics of the song are represented by the video. Throughout the video, Lady Gaga looks directly into the camera therefore creating a personal connection with the audience as the artist 'breaks the fourth wall' therefore making the audience feel more involved as the it appears as if the artist is looking directly at the viewer.

Another music video that applies to Goodwins Conventions of Music Videos is I Write Sins Not Tragedies by Panic! At The Disco. This music video can apply as it follows a narrative based on the lyrics of the song, in this song the narrative is a wedding. This song also refers to the 'notion of looking' where the artist breaks the 'fourth wall' therefore creating a more personal connection with the viewer. This video also has demands of the record label as there is many close ups of the lead singer of the band (Brendon Urie) as well as the other members of the band throughout the video.

Familiar Taste Of Poison by Halestorm is another music video that can be applied to Goodwins Conventions of Music Videos as there is a clear relationship between the lyrics and the visuals of the music video. The lyrics of the song follows the 'poison' relationship between a man and a woman where the man poisons the woman. This is shown in the narrative of the music video. There is also the demands of the record label. This can be shown by the frequent close ups of the lead singer Lzzy Hale. However this music video also subverts to Goodwins Conventions as typical rock song music videos usually include the band performing the song onstage in some form whereas this music video does not.

Paradise by Coldplay conforms to Goodwin's conventions of music videos as the video follows a narrative and the video links to the lyrics of the song. It also shows genre characteristics as it is a rock song and in the video there is footage of the band performing the song. I like this music video because it has a good narrative and it also uses a wide range of camera shots and also uses lens flares effectively.

The Greatest by Sia also fits Goodwin's characteristics of music videos as in Sia's music videos there is a motif shown throughout which is making the video longer than the actual song (which is shown in this video) and also most of Sia's recent videos, Maddie Zeigler dances throughout the video (also shown in this video)
This sheet shows the different music videos that I watched and the reasons I liked them and why they conform to Goodwin's conventions of music videos.
